What it is

Training your vision so your eyes work as a team

Vision therapy is a personalised programme of eye exercises to improve how your eyes work: how they focus, how they coordinate with each other and with your hands, and how you process what you see.

It is recommended when there are focusing or coordination problems that are not fully corrected with glasses or contact lenses. It is prescribed and supervised by an optometrist, and it does not hurt: these are exercises, not a procedure.

  • FocusingSwitching from near to far quickly and effortlessly.
  • Binocular visionGetting both eyes to coordinate and work together.
  • Eye trackingFollowing moving objects or a line of text.
  • Hand-eye coordinationPrecision in sports and manual tasks.
When to consider it

Signs that something is not quite right

If any of these sound familiar, tell us. The first step is to check your eyes and see where it comes from.

  • You find it hard to focusUp close, far away or when switching from one distance to another.
  • Blurry vision that comes and goesEspecially after reading for a while.
  • Tired eyes with screensEye strain when reading or working on the computer.
  • Headaches when readingOr when writing and doing close-up tasks.
  • Double vision up closeOne of the symptoms of convergence insufficiency.
  • You find it hard to concentrateOn visual tasks that need sustained attention.

What about children? Watch out if they…

  • Frown or get very close to books and screens.
  • Complain of headaches when reading.
  • Find it hard to follow objects with their eyes.
  • Squint, rub their eyes or cover one eye to read.

If you are worried about an eye that turns or sees less, get it checked as soon as possible: a lazy eye is best treated at a young age.

What it is for

Vision problems it works on

Every case is different. Some also need an ophthalmologist, and we will tell you clearly.

Focusing difficulties

Problems adjusting your vision between distances. Focusing exercises help you switch from near to far more easily.

Convergence insufficiency

The eyes do not coordinate well when looking up close: tiredness, blurry or double vision and headaches when reading. It is treated with convergence exercises guided by a specialist and at home; improvement usually takes 12 weeks or more.

Eye strain

Tired eyes from constant overexertion, very common if you spend many hours in front of screens.

Lazy eye (amblyopia)

The vision in one eye does not develop properly in childhood. It is diagnosed and treated by the ophthalmologist, usually with glasses, a patch or eye drops. The sooner it is treated, the better: ideally before the age of 7 or 8. Vision therapy can complement that treatment.

With your ophthalmologist

Strabismus (squint)

One or both eyes turn. The ophthalmologist assesses each case: sometimes prism glasses or exercises are enough and other times surgery is needed. Vision therapy can help with coordination when it is recommended.

With your ophthalmologist

Hand-eye coordination

Difficulty with tasks that need precision, such as sports or manual activities.

How it works

This is vision therapy at LUPER

A personalised plan, with sessions in the consulting room and exercises at home.

  • Personalised assessment

Our optometrists check your vision thoroughly to find out what you need.

  • Your tailored plan

Focusing exercises, visual perception games and, if needed, prisms or special lenses.

  • Sessions in the consulting room

With the optometrist: anaglyphs, visual games for children and perception exercises.

  • Practice at home

Small tasks to reinforce what you work on in each session.

  • Follow-up and adjustments

We review your progress and adapt the exercises.

How long does it last? On average, between 3 and 6 months with weekly sessions. Every case is different, and we explain it to you after the assessment.

Exercises

Vision therapy exercises

  • Eye trackingThey improve your ability to follow moving objects: useful for reading and for sport.
  • FocusingTo switch focus quickly between distances.
  • Hand-eye coordinationMore precision in tasks that need visual coordination.
  • Anaglyphs and 3D perceptionThey work on depth perception and binocular vision.

The exercises are set by the optometrist after assessing you. Done on your own, without knowing what needs working on, they may be of no use at all.

For all ages

Is vision therapy only for children?

No. It is common in children, but many visual dysfunctions also affect adults and older people.

Vision therapy for children

An undetected vision problem can make reading and close-up tasks harder. The therapy works on focusing, reading and visual comprehension.

Vision therapy for adults

For eye strain, focusing problems and as visual rehabilitation in cases of strabismus or lazy eye, always together with your ophthalmologist.

Older people

It can help with age-related vision problems or after eye surgery, to gain comfort and independence.

When to see an ophthalmologist

If an eye turns, if you suddenly see double or if you notice you are losing vision, ask for a medical assessment. Lazy eye and strabismus are diagnosed and treated by the ophthalmologist; vision therapy is added when it is recommended. And to be honest with you: dyslexia and learning disorders are not eye problems, and vision therapy does not treat them.

Price

How much does vision therapy cost?

It depends on each case. These are the factors that most affect the price:

Length of treatment

It can range from a few weeks to several months, depending on how complex each case is.

Frequency of sessions

Each session includes exercises adapted to you; how many you need changes the total.

Materials

The materials and any lenses or prisms that need to be used.

Is it covered by the Spanish public health system (Seguridad Social)? Generally, no. Ask us and we will give you straightforward guidance.

Let's talk

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about vision therapy

How long does a course of vision therapy last?

On average, between 3 and 6 months, with weekly sessions. Every case is different and the plan is adjusted to what you need.

Can vision therapy be done at home?

Yes, partly: the treatment includes exercises at home to reinforce what you have learnt. But the optometrist's supervision in the sessions is key for it to work.

Is it suitable for adults?

Yes. Vision therapy can be done at any age, and many adults do it for focusing problems or eye strain.

Does it work for lazy eye?

Lazy eye (amblyopia) is diagnosed and treated by the ophthalmologist, usually with glasses, a patch or eye drops, and the sooner the better. Vision therapy can complement that treatment when it is recommended.

Does it work for strabismus?

It depends on the case. Strabismus is assessed by the ophthalmologist: sometimes it is treated with prism glasses or exercises and other times with surgery. Vision therapy can help with eye coordination when it is recommended.

Does vision therapy hurt?

No. It is painless and non-invasive: these are supervised exercises.

How do I know if my child needs it?

Watch whether they frown, get very close to objects, get headaches when reading or find it hard to follow objects with their eyes. The first step is an eye check-up.

Does it help with dyslexia or ADHD?

It does not treat them: dyslexia and learning disorders are not eye problems. If there is also a vision problem, such as a focusing or convergence problem, treating it can make close-up reading more comfortable.

Does the Spanish public health system (Seguridad Social) cover vision therapy?

Generally, no. It is a service provided at optometry centres such as Ópticas LUPER.

Hoy he estado y me ha atendido Jaime.

Totalmente recomendable.
